[ARCHIVED] Additional Landfill Load Size Restrictions Coming

The City of Green River recently began implementing pre-closure operational changes at its Landfill in preparation for our transition to a Transfer Station and to effectively monitor the capacity level restrictions we have to meet as we close the Landfill.  The first change took effect September 1, 2016, and impacted commercial waste haulers.  Loads from commercial haulers, including many of our own City garbage trucks, were being sent to the Sweetwater County Solid Waste District #1 Landfill.

The next change in load size restrictions must now be put in place.  As of November 14, 2016, the Green River Landfill will no longer be able to accept garbage loads larger than a pickup truck.  This means garbage loads in commercial-style trucks and trucks with trailers, including dump trailers, will no longer be accepted, and will need to go to the Sweetwater County Solid Waste District #1 Landfill.  City of Green River residents will still be able to use the Green River Landfill for no charge, but garbage loads must be in a pickup truck or smaller vehicle.  The City Landfill will continue to accept green waste, metal goods, and recycling.

We recognize this load size restriction may impose an inconvenience on some of our customers. However, the current Landfill cell is reaching capacity, and these changes are intended to regulate the pace of waste disposal at the Landfill to ensure proper grades for the final closure.  We also want to preserve the ability for our residential customers to continue to use the Landfill until the Transfer Station is ready for use.  The Transfer Station will be built at the existing Landfill entrance, and construction will begin soon.  In the future, all waste formerly deposited at the Green River Landfill will be sent to the Sweetwater County Disposal District #1 Landfill between Green River and Rock Springs.

If you have any questions about this or any other pre-closure changes at the City of Green River Landfill, please contact Public Works at 307-872-0528.
