Bill Thompson was born in Casper, Wyoming and raised in Midwest, Wyoming. He is married to Rita Thompson and has 4 children. Thompson has called Green River home for over 50 years having started his teaching career with School District #2 in 1961.
Thompson obtained an Associate of Arts degree from Casper College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming. Thompson also has a Master of Science degree from Utah State University with triple majors in History, Political Science and Economics. Thompson has taught classes at Western Wyoming Community college and was an adjunct instructor for the University of Wyoming.
Thompson has been involved with many service and civic organizations including being a past president or chairman of the Sweetwater County Joint Travel & Tourism Board, the Green River Chamber of Commerce, the Green River Historical Preservation Commission (a Certified Local Government (CLG)), a three-time President of the Green River Lions Club, and a member of the Golden Hour Senior Board and the Green River Planning & Zoning Commission.
Thompson’s political experience involves ten years in the Wyoming State Legislature where he served as a State House of Representative from 2000 to 2010. During his tenure representing House District 60, Thompson helped acquire over $1 million in direct grants and/or deferred costs for the City of Green River and Sweetwater County School District #2.
As Interim City Administrator, Thompson will concentrate on a smooth and gradual transition for the new City Administrator when he or she comes on board.
