1. What is a Geographic Information System (GIS)?

A GIS stores all the features you might find on a map such as roads, buildings, utilities, and park locations. Similar features are categorized into layers. These layers can then be stacked on top of each other to form a map that can be displayed and printed. A GIS also stores information about each feature in a database such as road surface material, park name, parcel number, and owner name. The graphic elements and database are connected, providing a powerful analysis tool for features represented on the map. Learn more at the GIS website.

2. What does it cost to obtain a hard copy of a map?

For standard published maps the prices are as follows:

• A-size (8.5" x 11") - $3


• B-size (11" x 17") - $5


• C-size (17" x 22") - $10


• D-size (22" x 34", 24" x 36") - $15


• E-size (34" x 44", 36" x 48") - $20

Non-standard, custom map production will be billed at cost of time and materials.
